COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Victoria is a structured program that integrates physics, mathematics, chemistry, and Earth system science to study the ocean, atmosphere, and climate. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge through courses in chemistry, physics, calculus, programming, and electives, establishing essential scientific and analytical skills. Year 2 focuses on core physical science training, including atmospheric physics, thermodynamics, quantum physics, electricity and magnetism, experimental and computational physics, along with advanced calculus, matrix algebra, and statistics. In Years 3 and 4, students specialize in ocean and climate systems by studying biological, chemical, and geological oceanography, physical oceanography, and oceanographic field methods. They also explore key topics such as climate physics and dynamic meteorology. Advanced mathematics, including differential equations, supports understanding of complex environmental systems. Physics courses such as classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, optics, fluid mechanics, and time series analysis strengthen their ability to model and interpret natural processes. Field school experience and laboratory work provide practical training in data collection and real-world environmental research. Electives at upper levels allow further specialization in physics or Earth sciences. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in climate science, oceanography, meteorology, environmental research, and resource management, equipping them to analyze and address complex global environmental challenges.
