COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Physics at the University of Victoria is a rigorous program that combines advanced mathematics and physics to help students understand the fundamental principles and structures of the physical world. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation in calculus, logic, introductory physics, programming, and supporting science electives from fields such as biology, chemistry, earth science, or microbiology. Year 2 strengthens mathematical and physical preparation through courses in calculus, linear algebra, abstract algebra, real analysis, and computational methods, along with core physics topics including quantum physics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and experimental physics. In Years 3 and 4, students move into advanced theoretical study, covering complex variables, abstract algebra, real and differential equations, partial differential equations, and higher-level mathematical analysis. Alongside this, they complete advanced physics courses such as classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and statistical mechanics, as well as laboratory and seminar-based learning. Students also choose between an honours thesis, independent project, or seminar pathway, allowing them to engage in research and specialized study. Electives provide additional flexibility for deeper exploration of mathematics or physics topics. Overall, the program emphasizes logical reasoning, abstraction, and problem-solving, preparing graduates for careers in research, academia, data science, quantitative finance, and advanced scientific computing.
