COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Geophysics at the University of Victoria is a structured program that combines physics, geology, mathematics, and Earth science to help students understand the Earth’s physical structure and processes. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation through courses in chemistry, ocean and atmosphere science, Earth systems, calculus, physics, and programming, along with electives that support broader learning. Year 2 focuses on core Earth science and geophysics topics, including sedimentary and structural geology, mineralogy, introductory geophysics, advanced calculus, matrix algebra, electromagnetism, and computational physics. In Year 3, students deepen their understanding through field-based learning in Earth Science Field School and advanced studies in geophysics, supported by physics courses such as thermodynamics, classical mechanics, quantum physics, and optics, along with differential equations and electives. Year 4 emphasizes advanced geophysical analysis, including global tectonics, applied geophysics, quantum mechanics, and time series analysis, alongside mathematical electives like complex variables, numerical methods, and scientific computing. Students also complete additional upper-level Earth science or physics courses and electives to tailor their degree. Overall, the program integrates theoretical knowledge, laboratory training, fieldwork, and computational skills, preparing graduates for careers in geoscience, environmental consulting, resource exploration, and research focused on understanding Earth’s internal processes.
