COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Physics and Astronomy at the University of Victoria is a structured program that builds strong foundations in physics, mathematics, computing, and astronomy over four years of study. In Year 1, students begin with introductory physics, modern astronomy, calculus, programming, and supporting science electives from fields such as biology, chemistry, earth sciences, or microbiology, along with general electives to broaden their academic base. Year 2 focuses on core scientific principles, including astrophysics, quantum physics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, experimental physics, and computer-assisted physics, supported by advanced calculus and linear algebra. In Year 3, students move into more advanced topics such as classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and observational astronomy, while also studying differential equations and choosing specialized physics or astronomy electives. Year 4 allows deeper specialization through upper-level physics and astronomy courses, along with mathematics electives such as complex variables, numerical methods, and mathematical modelling, which strengthen analytical and computational skills. Throughout the program, students continue to complete electives that provide flexibility and interdisciplinary learning. Overall, the program combines theoretical knowledge, mathematical rigor, laboratory experience, and observational training to prepare graduates for careers in research, space science, data analysis, technology, and further graduate studies in physics and astronomy.
