COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Geography at the University of Victoria is a structured program designed to build strong foundations in Earth sciences, environmental systems, and geospatial analysis over four years. In Year 1, students complete core courses in chemistry, ocean and atmosphere studies, Earth science, mathematics, and physics, along with an introductory geography course and electives. This provides essential scientific and analytical grounding. In Year 2, the focus shifts to more specialized Earth system knowledge, including thermodynamics, sedimentary and structural geology, mineralogy, geochemistry, and introductory geophysics. Students also develop technical skills through GIS and quantitative methods, supported by calculus and statistics courses. In Years 3 and 4, the program becomes highly advanced and applied, covering Earth system modelling, geomorphology, field studies, and advanced topics in geology and environmental science. Students also study remote sensing, GIS applications, and spatial analysis, gaining expertise in digital mapping and environmental monitoring tools. Electives allow further specialization across areas such as atmospheric physics, hydrogeology, tectonics, and applied geophysics. Field school and hands-on learning experiences are key components, helping students apply theory in real-world environments. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in environmental science, geoscience, resource management, and geospatial technology, combining strong scientific training with practical and technical skills for understanding and managing Earth systems.
