COURSE CURRICULUM

The Music and Computer Science program at the University of Victoria is an interdisciplinary degree that integrates advanced musical training with computer science, allowing students to develop both artistic and technical expertise. In the first year, students build foundational skills in programming, mathematics, music theory, musicianship and global sound studies, gaining an understanding of how music and technology interact. The second year strengthens this integration through courses in algorithms, signal systems, matrix algebra and software development, alongside composition, ensemble performance and advanced musicianship. Students also begin exploring music theory in greater depth while continuing active performance or composition work. In the third year, the program becomes more specialized, combining computer architecture, digital signal processing and software systems with music-focused courses such as sound recording techniques, computer music and musical analysis. Students also choose advanced electives in areas like operating systems, data visualization, human-computer interaction and machine learning, supporting flexible academic interests. In the final year, students engage with advanced topics such as audio signal processing, acoustics, music information retrieval, sound recording seminars and computer music research, alongside upper-level electives in computer science or music. The program emphasizes hands-on learning in studios, labs and performance settings, encouraging collaboration between musicians, engineers and researchers. Graduates are prepared for careers in music production, audio engineering, software development, digital media, gaming, sound design and research, combining creative expression with technical innovation.
