COURSE CURRICULUM

The Microbiology program at the University of Victoria is a science-intensive degree that builds a strong foundation in biology, chemistry and laboratory research, while progressively developing advanced expertise in microorganisms and their applications. In the first year, students study core sciences such as cell biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics, alongside electives that broaden their academic background. In the second year, the focus shifts toward biological systems and microbial foundations, with courses in cell biology, genetics, organic chemistry and introductory microbiology, supported by training in statistical methods for life sciences. The third year emphasizes deeper scientific understanding and hands-on laboratory experience, including biochemistry, molecular genetics, cell biology, immunology and molecular microbiology, helping students connect theory with experimental practice. In the final year, students engage in advanced applied laboratory work and research-based training through specialized BCMB courses, while also selecting from upper-level microbiology topics such as virology, biotechnology, microbial pathogenesis and microbiota and human health. Additional science electives allow further specialization or interdisciplinary exploration. Throughout the program, strong emphasis is placed on experimental skills, data analysis and scientific communication, preparing students for real-world scientific challenges. Graduates are well equipped for careers in biomedical research, healthcare, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, environmental science and further study in graduate or professional programs, with the ability to apply microbiological knowledge to solve global health and environmental problems.
