COURSE CURRICULUM

The Microbiology and Chemistry combined program at the University of Victoria is a rigorous Bachelor of Science degree that integrates biological and chemical sciences to explain how living systems function at the molecular level. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in cell biology, general chemistry, physics and mathematics, ensuring they are prepared for advanced scientific study. The second year focuses on core disciplinary training, including cell biology, organic, inorganic, analytical and physical chemistry, thermodynamics, synthetic chemistry laboratory work, and introductory microbiology, along with statistical methods for life sciences. In the third and fourth years, the program becomes highly specialized and research-oriented, with advanced laboratory training in biochemistry, molecular microbiology and applied research techniques through BCMB courses. Students also study key microbiology subjects such as immunology, molecular microbiology, and select advanced topics like virology, biotechnology and microbial pathogenesis. Chemistry courses at the upper level allow students to deepen their understanding of analytical, organic, inorganic and physical chemistry through both theory and laboratory practice. A significant feature of the program is its strong emphasis on hands-on laboratory experience, experimental design and scientific research skills. Students also complete elective courses that allow some flexibility in specialization. Graduates are well prepared for careers in biomedical research, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, healthcare, environmental science and for further graduate or professional studies, with strong skills in both chemistry and microbiology.
