COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Mathematics at the University of Victoria is a rigorous and structured program focused on developing advanced mathematical, analytical and computational skills. In the first two years, students build a strong foundation in core areas such as programming, calculus (up to multivariable levels), linear algebra, logic and foundations, discrete mathematics, real analysis, and probability and statistics. This early phase emphasizes both theoretical understanding and computational application, with additional exposure to computer-assisted mathematics, data science or related scientific electives. In the upper years, the program becomes more advanced and specialized, focusing on higher-level mathematics and statistics. Students complete courses in linear algebra, probability theory or mathematical statistics, along with upper-level electives in mathematics and statistics at the 300 and 400 level. These advanced courses allow students to explore deeper topics such as abstract algebra, analysis, applied mathematics and statistical theory. The BSc structure is designed for students who want strong preparation in quantitative reasoning, scientific computing and formal mathematical methods. It is especially suitable for those planning careers or further study in data science, finance, actuarial science, computer science, engineering or graduate-level mathematics, where strong technical and analytical skills are essential.
