COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Victoria is a rigorous program that integrates mathematical theory with statistical methods to analyze data and model real-world phenomena. In Years 1 and 2, students build a strong foundation in programming, calculus, linear algebra, algebra, logic, real analysis, and both introductory probability and statistics. They also develop computational skills through courses such as data science, computer-assisted mathematics, or programming, while completing electives that broaden their academic experience. This stage focuses on strengthening logical reasoning, quantitative thinking, and technical problem-solving abilities. In Years 3 and 4, students progress to advanced and specialized topics, including linear algebra, applied regression analysis, sampling techniques, and mathematical statistics. They also choose from a wide range of upper-level statistics courses such as time series analysis, Bayesian statistics, multivariate analysis, statistical computing, and experimental design, allowing for deep specialization in applied and theoretical statistics. Additional mathematics courses in areas such as mathematical modelling, combinatorics, differential equations, or dynamical systems provide further analytical depth. The program emphasizes the use of mathematics and statistics to interpret complex data, make predictions, and support decision-making. Graduates are well prepared for careers in data science, actuarial science, finance, research, health analytics, technology, and graduate-level study in mathematics or statistics.
