COURSE CURRICULUM

Kinesiology at UVic provides a structured, science-based pathway for students interested in human health, movement, sport and rehabilitation. In first year, students build a strong foundation in human biology and physical activity through core courses such as human anatomy, systemic physiology, nutrition, psychology and physical activity studies, along with introductory science and math courses that support later technical learning. This early stage develops essential knowledge of how the human body functions and how physical activity affects health and performance. In second year, students begin applying this foundation through courses in human movement analysis, motor learning, exercise prescription and cellular physiology, while also gaining skills in statistics and professional practice relevant to kinesiology. Third year deepens applied understanding through biomechanics, functional anatomy, injury prevention, psychology of physical activity, motor control and chronic disease pathology, along with upper-level science electives that allow specialization. Students also begin integrating theory with practice through more advanced kinesiology-focused electives. In fourth year, the program emphasizes advanced exercise physiology, measurement and evaluation, and professional development, alongside further upper-level electives that allow students to tailor their degree toward specific interests. Across all years, the curriculum blends laboratory work, applied learning and scientific study, preparing graduates for careers in health sciences, sport performance, rehabilitation and further professional study such as physiotherapy, medicine or graduate research.
