COURSE CURRICULUM

The Economics program at the University of Victoria provides a structured progression from foundational economic concepts to advanced analytical and quantitative methods used in real-world decision-making. In first year, students begin with introductory microeconomics and macroeconomics, alongside calculus, and either programming or computing fundamentals. They also take a social science elective and a broad range of electives to build interdisciplinary awareness. In second year, students move into intermediate microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, while developing stronger quantitative skills through statistics, probability, calculus, and matrix algebra. Writing or technical communication courses are included to strengthen the ability to explain economic ideas clearly. In third and fourth year, students focus on advanced economic theory and applied methods, including intermediate microeconomics, mathematical economics, and econometrics. These courses emphasize both static and dynamic modelling, as well as data analysis and empirical research techniques used in policy and industry settings. Students also complete upper-level economics courses and electives that allow specialization in areas of interest. Throughout the program, a minimum performance standard is required in key courses to ensure strong analytical ability. By combining theory, mathematics, and statistical analysis, the program prepares students for careers in policy analysis, finance, consulting, government, and research, as well as for graduate study in economics or related fields.
