COURSE CURRICULUM

The Earth Sciences program at the University of Victoria is designed to give students a strong foundation in understanding how the Earth system works, from its deep interior to the oceans and atmosphere. In first year, students take core courses in chemistry, mathematics, physics and introductory Earth system science, including EOS110 Oceans and Atmosphere and EOS120 The Dynamic Earth, with an option to begin biology depending on interest. In second year, the focus shifts to core geological and geophysical concepts such as sedimentary geology, structural geology, mineralogy, geochemistry, geophysics and climate systems, supported by calculus and thermodynamics to strengthen quantitative skills. Third year emphasizes applied learning and advanced Earth system topics, including Earth Science Field School, igneous and metamorphic geology, Earth history, isotopes, and Earth system modelling, along with specialized courses in oceanography, atmospheric physics and marine geology. Students also choose electives to deepen their interests in related areas. In fourth year, students complete advanced Earth system science and upper-level Earth Sciences courses along with a significant number of electives that allow specialization. Throughout the program, students develop strong field, laboratory and analytical skills, preparing them for careers in geoscience, environmental consulting, resource exploration, climate science and further academic study in Earth and environmental sciences.
