COURSE CURRICULUM

Computer Science at the University of Victoria is designed to build strong foundations in programming, algorithms, systems, and theoretical computer science while also allowing flexibility through electives. In the first year, students focus on core programming skills through introductory courses in programming, along with mathematics subjects such as calculus, logic, and foundations, plus communication or literature courses and electives that broaden their academic base. In the second year, the program becomes more structured around core computing concepts, including algorithms and data structures, computer architecture, software development methods, matrix algebra, technical writing, and probability and statistics, supported by advanced calculus or mathematics electives. In the third year, students study deeper theoretical and practical areas such as foundations of computer science, operating systems, and database systems, along with additional upper-level computer science electives to develop specialization. The fourth year allows further customization through advanced 400-level computer science or software engineering courses and a significant number of electives. The program emphasizes analytical thinking, problem-solving, and software development skills, preparing students to understand both the theoretical and applied sides of computing. Overall, this degree provides a strong foundation in computer science principles and practical software development, preparing graduates for careers in software engineering, data science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and other technology-driven industries.
