COURSE CURRICULUM

Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Victoria is designed to build strong expertise in both theoretical mathematics and practical computing. In the first year, students study foundational programming, calculus, logic, matrix algebra or statistics, and electives, establishing core skills in both disciplines. In the second year, the focus shifts to algorithms, data structures, computer architecture, software development, discrete mathematics, advanced calculus, and either algebra or real analysis, along with additional electives and mathematics foundations. In the third year, students explore more advanced topics in computer science such as foundations of computation, programming languages, operating systems, databases, networks, and computer graphics, while also studying higher-level mathematics including algebra, analysis, probability, differential equations, optimization, and mathematical modeling. Students begin to specialize by choosing from a wide range of advanced mathematics and statistics courses. In the fourth year, the program becomes highly specialized, offering advanced courses in areas such as algorithms, cryptography, machine learning theory, scientific computing, stochastic processes, and mathematical logic, along with upper-level mathematics and computer science electives. The program emphasizes both theoretical depth and practical application, helping students connect mathematical reasoning with computational problem-solving. Overall, it prepares graduates for careers in data science, artificial intelligence, software development, research, and applied mathematics, as well as for advanced graduate studies in either field.
