COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science program in Computer Science and Health Information Science at the University of Victoria is designed to prepare students for careers at the intersection of computing and healthcare systems. In the first year, students build a foundation in programming, mathematics, logic, and communication while also studying introductory courses in health information technology and the Canadian healthcare system. Students without prior biology background also take a basic life sciences or anatomy-related course to strengthen their understanding of health contexts. In the second year, the program focuses more deeply on computing and healthcare applications, including algorithms, computer architecture, technical communication, health database design, biomedical fundamentals, organizational behaviour in healthcare, software development methods, and statistics. In the third year, students study advanced computer science topics such as operating systems, programming languages, computer organization, and systems analysis, alongside upper-level health information science courses that explore health data systems and professional practice. In the fourth year, students complete advanced computer science and health informatics courses, along with additional upper-level electives in related disciplines. The program integrates technical computing skills with knowledge of healthcare systems, preparing students to design and manage digital health technologies. Overall, it equips graduates for careers in health informatics, healthcare software development, data systems management, and technology-driven healthcare innovation.
