COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science (BSc) program in Chemistry at the University of Victoria is a structured and intensive degree designed to provide students with a strong foundation in chemical sciences along with advanced theoretical knowledge and hands-on laboratory experience. In the first year, students study core subjects including introductory biology, general chemistry, calculus, physics, and electives, building a strong base in scientific and mathematical principles. In the second year, the focus shifts to core chemistry disciplines such as quantitative analysis, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, thermodynamics, and synthetic laboratory work, along with higher-level calculus or statistics and additional electives. This stage emphasizes practical lab skills and a deeper understanding of chemical reactions and structures. In the third and fourth years, students move into advanced topics including biochemistry, instrumental analysis, transition metal chemistry, quantum chemistry, and professional development in chemistry. They also complete multiple laboratory courses in analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, gaining extensive practical experience in modern techniques and instrumentation. In addition, students take upper-level chemistry electives and complete a significant number of elective credits to broaden their knowledge.
