COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science (BSc) program in Ocean and Environmental Chemistry at the University of Victoria is designed to help students understand the chemical processes that govern the oceans and their interaction with biological, physical, and geological systems. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in chemistry, biology, mathematics, and physics, along with elective courses, which prepare them for more advanced scientific study. In the second year, the program focuses on core chemistry subjects such as quantitative analysis, inorganic and organic chemistry, thermodynamics, and synthetic laboratory work, along with higher-level calculus and additional electives. In the third and fourth years, students specialize in ocean-related chemistry and Earth system science through advanced courses in instrumental analysis, chemical oceanography, physical oceanography, aqueous chemistry, and Earth system modeling. They also gain hands-on experience through oceanographic field schools and laboratory training in analytical, inorganic, organic, or physical chemistry. Additional courses in biological or geological oceanography and atmospheric physics help students understand the interconnected nature of Earth’s systems. Statistics is included to strengthen data analysis and research skills, while upper-level chemistry electives allow further specialization. Overall, the program combines chemistry with ocean science to help students understand marine environments and human impacts on oceans, preparing graduates for careers in marine research, environmental science, climate studies, and related scientific fields or for advanced academic study.
