COURSE CURRICULUM

Chemistry and Earth & Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria is designed to help students understand Earth systems through the integration of chemical, geological, atmospheric, and oceanic processes. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in general chemistry, ocean and atmosphere studies, dynamic Earth processes, mathematics, physics, and electives, along with introductory chemistry concepts. In the second year, the program becomes more specialized with core courses in quantitative analysis, inorganic and organic chemistry, thermodynamics, synthetic laboratory work, sedimentary geology, mineralogy, geochemistry, and climate systems, supported by advanced calculus and additional electives. In the third and fourth years, students focus on advanced interdisciplinary topics such as biochemistry, Earth system modeling, isotopes in natural sciences, igneous and metamorphic geology, and advanced chemistry electives. Laboratory training continues through specialized chemistry lab courses, while Earth science field schools or Earth system science courses provide practical field-based experience. Students also explore higher-level topics in oceanography, Earth history, tectonics, petrology, and biogeochemical cycles. Statistics is included to strengthen data analysis skills, and electives allow further specialization. Overall, the program blends chemistry with Earth science to help students understand natural systems and environmental change, preparing them for careers in geochemistry, environmental science, climate research, oceanography, and related scientific fields or for advanced graduate study.
