COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Anthropology at the University of Victoria is structured to build strong foundational, intermediate, and advanced knowledge of human societies through a combination of anthropology, science, and elective courses. In the first year, students begin with introductory anthropology such as ANTH 100, along with courses in computing or mathematics, science or computer science, academic writing, and additional anthropology and elective courses to build a broad academic base. The second year focuses more on core anthropology development, requiring courses in cultural, archaeological, and biological anthropology, along with courses in health, psychology, science, or computer science to strengthen analytical and scientific understanding. Students also continue taking electives to broaden their academic exposure. In the third and fourth years, the program becomes more specialized and advanced, requiring courses in archaeological anthropology, biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, and research methods and theory. Students also complete higher-level science, psychology, or computer science courses, along with advanced anthropology electives. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary learning by integrating social sciences with scientific methods and research. Electives at upper levels allow students to tailor their studies based on interests and career goals. In total, students must complete 60 units to graduate, ensuring a balanced combination of core anthropology knowledge, scientific training, and academic flexibility designed to prepare them for research, graduate studies, or professional careers in anthropology-related fields.
