COURSE CURRICULUM

The Writing program at UVic is a studio-based degree designed for students who want to develop strong creative writing skills while exploring literature, storytelling, and professional writing practices. A central requirement of the program is WRIT100 Introduction to Writing, where students must achieve a minimum grade of B, establishing a strong foundation in writing craft and discipline. Students also complete a Fine Arts co-requisite, selecting from courses in art history, visual arts, theatre, music, or interdisciplinary arts, which broadens their understanding of creative expression across different media. The program is structured around intensive writing workshops where students actively practice and refine their skills in genres such as poetry, fiction, playwriting, creative nonfiction, and screenwriting. In the introductory stage, students take courses like WRIT201A, WRIT202A, WRIT203A, WRIT204A, or WRIT218A, followed by advanced versions in WRIT201B, WRIT202B, WRIT203B, WRIT204B, or WRIT218B, allowing progression in their chosen genre. In upper years, students specialize further by focusing on a primary stream such as Poetry, Fiction, Playwriting, Creative Nonfiction, or Screenwriting, completing advanced workshops and production-focused courses. The degree culminates in significant upper-level WRIT coursework at the 300–400 level, where students refine a professional-quality portfolio. Overall, the program emphasizes creativity, mentorship, and revision-based learning, preparing graduates for careers in writing, publishing, media, screen industries, communications, and other fields requiring strong storytelling and communication skills.
