COURSE CURRICULUM

The combined Visual Arts and Computer Science program at UVic offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that integrates creative studio practice with core computing and software development skills, preparing students for careers at the intersection of art, design, and technology. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge through studio courses such as ART103 Foundation Drawing and Painting, ART104 Sculpture and Material Methods, ART105 Photography and Video Art, and ART106 Core Media Technologies and Arts, alongside essential computer science and mathematics courses including CSC110, CSC115, MATH122 Logic and Foundations, STAT255 Statistics, and either MATH100 or MATH109 Calculus. Year 1 also includes electives and writing-related requirements to support academic development. In Year 2, students progress into core computing topics such as algorithms, computer architecture, software development methods, and matrix algebra, while continuing studio practice through ART155 and additional courses in drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, digital media, or video art. Year 3 deepens both streams, combining advanced studio art options with upper-level computer science courses such as algorithms, operating systems, databases, and human-computer interaction, alongside electives for flexibility. In Year 4, students complete advanced studio work and higher-level computing courses including computer graphics and additional CSC 400-level electives, allowing specialization in both creative and technical areas. Overall, the program develops hybrid skills in artistic expression, computational thinking, and interactive media design, preparing graduates for careers in digital art, game development, UX/UI design, animation, software development, and other creative technology fields.
