COURSE CURRICULUM

Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria is a comprehensive, hands-on engineering program focused on designing, analyzing and improving mechanical systems that shape modern life. Students build a strong foundation in mathematics, physics and core engineering sciences before progressing into specialized study of mechanics, thermodynamics, materials, manufacturing, dynamics and control systems. The program emphasizes practical learning from the beginning through design labs, CAD work, and team-based engineering projects, helping students connect theory with real-world applications. In later years, students explore advanced topics such as fluid mechanics, heat transfer, vibrations, robotics, energy systems and mechanical design, while also developing professional skills in communication, ethics, economics and engineering law. A major feature of the program is the capstone design project in fourth year, where students work in teams to solve open-ended engineering problems, often linked to industry needs. Elective courses allow students to tailor their studies toward areas such as aerospace, HVAC, mechatronics, manufacturing or energy systems. Graduates are prepared for careers in automotive, aerospace, renewable energy, robotics, manufacturing and consulting industries, or for further study in graduate engineering programs.
