COURSE CURRICULUM

The Electrical Engineering program at the University of Victoria is structured to build strong foundations in mathematics, physics, computing and engineering principles before progressing into advanced electrical systems and design. In first year, students complete core engineering courses such as engineering chemistry, mechanics, programming, design and communication, along with calculus, matrix algebra and physics. This stage focuses on developing problem-solving skills and a solid understanding of fundamental engineering science. In second year, students transition into core electrical engineering topics including circuits, electromagnetism, digital design, signals and systems, computer architecture, and engineering materials, alongside advanced calculus, probability and introductory design work. In third year, the program becomes more specialized, covering linear circuits, electronic devices, communications systems, control theory, electromagnetics, microprocessor systems, electromechanical energy conversion, digital signal processing and a major design project that integrates multiple concepts. In fourth year, students complete a capstone design project and courses in professional practice, engineering ethics, economics, technical communication, and complementary studies in humanities or social sciences. They also select natural science and technical electives to specialize in areas of interest such as power systems, communications or electronics. Overall, the program blends theory, laboratory work and design experience to prepare students for careers in electrical engineering or advanced technical fields.
