COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) program in Civil Engineering at the University of Victoria is an accredited degree that prepares students for professional engineering practice, meeting the academic requirements for licensure with Engineers and Geoscientists BC. The program is structured across four years and includes a combination of foundational science, engineering principles, design practice, and co-operative education. In the first year, students study core subjects such as engineering chemistry, mechanics, calculus, physics, matrix algebra, programming, and design communication, which build a strong technical foundation. In the second year, the focus shifts to civil engineering fundamentals, including engineering drawing, sustainability, mechanics of solids, structural analysis, construction management, materials, geomatics, and advanced calculus and statistics. In the third year, students progress to specialized topics such as environmental engineering, fluid mechanics, geotechnical engineering, structural design in steel and concrete, transportation systems, building science, and numerical analysis. The fourth year emphasizes advanced design and professional development through a capstone design project, engineering law, technical electives, and complementary studies in humanities or social sciences. A key feature of the program is its integration of co-operative education terms, which provide students with paid, real-world engineering experience.
