COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor program in Child and Youth Care (CYC) at the University of Victoria is designed to prepare students for professional practice with children, youth, families, and communities through a strong combination of theory, practical training, and social justice education. In the first stage of the program, students complete foundational courses such as Introduction to Child and Youth Care, Lifespan Development, and Helping Skills, along with early practicum experience that provides supervised hands-on learning. Students also study areas such as change theory, Indigenous perspectives, law, group work, and social justice practice, helping them understand diverse social and cultural contexts. In the middle and advanced stages, students complete more complex coursework focused on identity development, family practice, case planning, disability studies, mental health, addictions, and advanced professional practice with families and groups. The program includes multiple supervised practicums that allow students to apply their learning in real community and professional settings. Students can also choose specialization streams such as Child Protection, Early Years, or Indigenous Studies, which provide focused training in specific areas of practice. Advanced Indigenous-focused courses emphasize relationships, community engagement, and culturally responsive practice. Overall, the program combines academic learning, practical experience, and ethical understanding to prepare graduates for careers in social services, youth support, community work, and child welfare organizations.
