COURSE CURRICULUM

The Writing program at UVic is a structured, workshop-based degree designed to help students develop strong creative writing skills across multiple genres, including poetry, fiction, playwriting, creative nonfiction, and screenwriting. The program begins with WRIT100 Introduction to Writing, where students must achieve a minimum grade of B, ensuring a solid foundation in writing practice and technique. Students also complete a Fine Arts co-requisite course, choosing from areas such as visual arts, theatre, music, film, or interdisciplinary arts, which broadens their understanding of creative expression beyond writing. Early-stage learning includes introductory workshops such as WRIT201A, WRIT202A, WRIT203A, WRIT204A, or WRIT218A, followed by continuation courses WRIT201B, WRIT202B, WRIT203B, WRIT204B, or WRIT218B, where students refine their skills through practice and feedback. In upper years, students select a specialization in one major stream such as Poetry, Fiction, Playwriting, Creative Nonfiction, or Screenwriting. Each stream involves advanced workshops like WRIT303, WRIT304, WRIT305, WRIT316, or WRIT318, along with higher-level courses such as WRIT401, WRIT402, WRIT403, WRIT416, or WRIT418, depending on the chosen focus. The program culminates in extensive upper-level WRIT coursework (300–400 level), emphasizing portfolio development and mastery of craft. Overall, the degree builds discipline, creativity, and professional writing ability, preparing graduates for careers in publishing, media, film, theatre, communications, and other creative industries.
