COURSE CURRICULUM

The first-year Theatre Major program at UVic provides a comprehensive foundation in both the practical and theoretical aspects of theatre. Students begin by taking core courses such as ATWP135 Academic Reading and Writing, THEA103 Current Performance Practices, THEA104 Theatre Concepts, and THEA105 Introduction to Stagecraft and Technical Practice, which introduce essential skills in communication, production, and technical theatre. Courses like THEA106 Ensemble Building, THEA120A Introduction to the Art of Acting I, and THEA206 Fundamentals of Play Analysis help students develop performance abilities, collaboration skills, and a strong understanding of dramatic texts and storytelling. In addition, students must choose a Fine Arts co-requisite course from options such as visual arts, music, writing, or interdisciplinary arts, ensuring a broader creative perspective. Elective courses further support individual academic interests. The program emphasizes progression and structured learning, with courses designed to be taken in sequence to build skills effectively. Students are also expected to complete designated theatre history courses in later years, which deepen their understanding of theatre across different periods and cultures, including ancient, modern, and contemporary works.
