COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Sociology at the University of Victoria is a structured program designed to help students understand social life, institutions, and inequality through theoretical and research-based approaches. In Year 1, students begin with foundational courses in Introduction to Sociology, covering both basic concepts of social life and contemporary society, along with a broad selection of electives to build a well-rounded academic base. In Year 2, students move into core disciplinary training with courses in classical social theory, sociological research methods, and social statistics, along with additional electives and a 200-level sociology requirement to strengthen foundational understanding. In Years 3 and 4, students engage in advanced study, starting with contemporary social theorizing and both qualitative and quantitative research methods. They then choose from a range of specialized upper-level courses covering topics such as racialization and decolonization, health and aging, crime and law, gender and sexuality, environmental sociology, families, social justice, and community-engaged sociology. Students also complete a significant number of upper-level sociology credits to deepen their expertise in chosen areas, along with general electives to broaden their education. Overall, the program develops strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, preparing graduates for careers in social research, community services, policy work, advocacy, and further academic study in sociology and related social sciences.
