COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Slavic Studies at the University of Victoria is an interdisciplinary program focused on the language, culture, history, and society of Russia and other Slavic regions. In the first year, students begin with foundational courses such as Introduction to Russian Society and Culture or The Culture of the Russian Revolution, along with additional lower-level Slavic Studies courses and electives that help build a broad academic base. In the second year, students continue expanding their knowledge through further lower-level SLST courses while completing electives across other disciplines to support a well-rounded education. In the third and fourth years, the program becomes more advanced and specialized, beginning with a core course in Slavic Cultural Studies. Students then choose from upper-level language and culture courses, including Advanced Russian, Russian Popular Culture, Advanced Russian Practice, and specialized topics in Russian culture, literature, and film, some of which are taught in Russian to strengthen language proficiency. Additional upper-level SLST coursework allows for deeper exploration of the region’s cultural and historical developments. Throughout the program, students also complete a significant number of electives. Overall, the degree builds strong language skills, cultural understanding, and critical thinking abilities, preparing graduates for careers in international relations, education, translation, cultural organizations, and global studies, as well as for further academic research.
