COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies at the University of Victoria is a structured program that examines religious traditions, beliefs, and their influence on society through historical, cultural, and contemporary perspectives. In the lower-level requirements, students begin with foundational courses such as an introduction to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, along with courses exploring the religious traditions of India, China, and Japan, plus additional introductory-level electives in religious studies. In the upper-level portion of the degree, students engage with more specialized topics such as magic and mysticism, religion and environment, religion and sexuality, religion in Canada, non-violent civil disobedience, and religions of East Asia. They also take advanced seminars and a capstone seminar that integrates and synthesizes their learning. Students complete further upper-level coursework in religious studies or related disciplines, such as philosophy, history, sociology, art history, anthropology, literature, and political science, allowing for interdisciplinary exploration. Eligible courses include subjects like Islamic art and architecture, philosophy of religion, sociology of religion, death and dying, medieval culture, and religious themes in history and art. Overall, the program develops strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills while providing a deep understanding of religious diversity, preparing students for careers in education, public service, cultural organizations, or further academic study in humanities and social sciences.
