COURSE CURRICULUM

The Pacific and Asian Studies major at the University of Victoria is designed to provide both broad knowledge and opportunities for specialization based on students’ interests. All students must complete core courses that build foundational understanding, including PAAS 100, 215, 315, and 400, which together develop skills in cultural analysis, communication, and advanced research. In addition to these required courses, students must complete 9 units of upper-level PAAS courses (300–499), allowing them to explore specific topics, regions, or themes in greater depth. The program offers three focus options to tailor the degree. The Intensive Language focus requires 9 units of sequential language study in an Asian or Pacific language, with at least 3 units at the 300 level or higher, emphasizing strong language proficiency. The Language and Culture focus combines 6 units of language study, including at least 3 units at the 200 level or above, with an additional 3 units of upper-level PAAS courses. The Experiential Learning focus allows students to complete 6 additional units from PAAS courses along with an experiential learning requirement, providing hands-on opportunities such as study abroad or community engagement to enhance practical and cultural understanding.
