COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Music (Major) at the University of Victoria is a flexible, academically grounded program offered through the School of Music within the Faculty of Fine Arts. It is designed for students who want to develop strong musical knowledge and skills while also benefiting from a broad liberal arts education. In the first two years, students study core foundations such as rudiments of music and music appreciation, along with a wide range of elective options that may include music theory, composition, performance ensembles, conducting, popular music studies, world music and music technology. Students also complete co-requisite courses from other Fine Arts disciplines such as visual arts, theatre or writing, helping them understand music within a wider artistic and cultural context. Ensemble participation and applied music courses allow students to gain practical performance experience while engaging with different musical traditions and styles. In the upper years, students focus more deeply on advanced music studies, completing significant coursework at the 300- and 400-level in areas aligned with their interests, along with additional electives that provide flexibility to combine music with other academic fields. The program encourages both academic inquiry and creative expression, developing skills in analysis, communication, performance and collaboration. Graduates are prepared for diverse career paths in music education, arts administration, media, performance, cultural industries and further academic study in music or related disciplines.
