COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medieval Studies program at the University of Victoria is designed to give students a focused yet flexible exploration of the medieval world through advanced, interdisciplinary coursework. The core requirement begins with MEDI303, The Medieval World, which provides a foundation for understanding the historical, cultural, intellectual and material dimensions of the Middle Ages. Students then choose from a range of thematic courses such as medieval culture, voices, objects, places and spaces, intellectual traditions, medieval media and the development of medievalism. These courses allow students to examine the medieval period from multiple perspectives, including literature, art, history, philosophy and material culture. Beyond the core and thematic requirements, students complete additional upper-level MEDI courses or approved electives from related disciplines, enabling them to tailor their studies to specific interests while maintaining a strong medieval focus. The program encourages an interdisciplinary approach, drawing connections between different fields and encouraging critical thinking about how the medieval past has been interpreted and represented over time. Students develop advanced research, analytical and writing skills through close engagement with primary and secondary sources. The flexible structure also supports broader academic exploration while maintaining depth in medieval studies. Graduates are well prepared for careers or further study in areas such as history, literature, cultural heritage, archival work, museum studies and other fields that value strong analytical and interpretive abilities.
