COURSE CURRICULUM

Mathematics at the University of Victoria is a flexible program designed to develop strong analytical, logical, and problem-solving skills while allowing students to combine mathematics with a wide range of other disciplines. In the first two years, students build a solid foundation in programming, calculus, linear algebra, real analysis, logic, discrete mathematics, and introductory probability and statistics. These core courses emphasize mathematical reasoning, proof techniques, and structured thinking. Students also take computer-assisted mathematics or related computational courses, helping them develop practical problem-solving and technical skills. A significant portion of the program is dedicated to electives, giving students the freedom to explore subjects in the humanities, social sciences, or sciences alongside mathematics. In the upper years, students study more advanced topics including linear algebra, probability or mathematical statistics, and a selection of upper-level mathematics and statistics courses at the 300 and 400 level. This allows students to deepen their understanding of theoretical and applied mathematics while maintaining flexibility in their academic path. The BA in Mathematics is particularly suitable for students interested in interdisciplinary careers in business, economics, education, law, or data-related fields, where strong quantitative and analytical skills are highly valued.
