COURSE CURRICULUM

Latin American Studies at UVic is an interdisciplinary program that combines language learning with the study of the cultures, histories, politics and societies of Latin America. Students begin with foundational coursework such as LAS200 Voices of Diversity and Dissent in Latin America and progress to an advanced seminar in LAS476, which develops research, discussion and analytical skills. A key requirement is prior or concurrent study of Spanish, ensuring students can engage more deeply with Latin American texts, cultures and communities. The program offers flexibility through a wide range of upper-level courses drawn from Latin American Studies and related disciplines such as anthropology, history, political science, geography, Indigenous studies, music and Spanish language and literature. This allows students to explore themes such as Indigenous Latin America, colonial history, revolutions, gender, media, human rights and cultural expression. By integrating perspectives from multiple fields, the program helps students understand the complexity and diversity of the region. Students are also encouraged to connect their studies with experiential learning opportunities such as field schools, study abroad programs and international placements in countries like Chile and Brazil. Graduates develop strong language, research, communication and intercultural skills, preparing them for careers in international relations, development work, NGOs, education, cultural organizations and global policy environments, as well as further academic study.
