COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in History at UVic offers a structured program that builds strong skills in historical inquiry, critical thinking and research. Students begin with foundational lower-level courses, including HSTR100 History, Power and Justice and HSTR201 Introduction to Historical Research, which introduce key themes and methods used in studying the past. These courses help students learn how historians analyze sources, construct arguments and interpret historical change. In addition, students complete further lower-level history electives to broaden their understanding of different time periods and regions. As they progress into upper-level study, students choose courses across three main areas: North America and Europe, regions outside North America and Europe, and advanced seminar courses that focus on independent analysis and discussion. This structure ensures both geographical breadth and deeper specialization. Students also complete additional upper-level electives that allow them to explore topics of personal interest, including social history, political change, cultural developments and global interactions. The program also offers substitution options through Greek and Roman Studies courses, allowing students to incorporate ancient history into their degree. Overall, the History BA at UVic develops strong analytical, writing and research skills while encouraging students to engage with diverse historical perspectives, preparing them for careers in education, research, public service, law, journalism and cultural heritage fields.
