COURSE CURRICULUM

Hispanic Studies at UVic is designed for students who want to build strong Spanish language skills while engaging deeply with the cultures, histories and creative expressions of the Spanish-speaking world. Through structured language progression from beginner to advanced levels, students develop fluency in speaking, reading and writing, supported by courses in Hispanic literature, film and cultural studies. The program encourages exploration of diverse perspectives across Latin America, Spain and global Hispanic communities, helping students understand how language connects to identity, politics and society. Alongside language learning, students strengthen communication, critical thinking and analytical skills that are valuable in many career paths including education, international relations, public service, tourism, translation and cultural organizations. The curriculum combines core language courses such as beginner, intermediate and advanced Spanish with literature courses that introduce students to major texts and cultural movements. In upper years, students take advanced seminars and higher-level electives that allow deeper specialization and independent engagement with Hispanic Studies. Elective flexibility also allows students to combine Spanish with other disciplines, creating a broad and adaptable academic profile.
