COURSE CURRICULUM

The Greek and Roman Studies program at the University of Victoria is structured to give students both flexibility and depth as they explore the ancient Mediterranean world. In Years 1 and 2, students complete 6 units of courses in Greek (GREE), Latin (LATI), or Greek and Roman Studies (GRS) at the 100–299 level. These courses introduce students to ancient languages, literature, history, mythology and culture, helping them build a foundational understanding of classical civilizations. Alongside this core study, students complete 24 units of electives, allowing them to explore other academic interests and create a broad liberal arts education.In Years 3 and 4, students move into more advanced study by completing 15 units of upper-level GREE, LATI or GRS courses at the 300–499 level. These courses focus on deeper analysis of ancient texts, historical contexts, archaeological evidence and cultural interpretation, strengthening students’ research and critical thinking skills. Students also complete 15 units of electives in upper-level or related disciplines, offering further opportunities for specialization or interdisciplinary learning. Overall, the program provides a balanced combination of focused classical studies and academic flexibility, preparing students for careers or further study in fields such as education, archaeology, museum work, publishing and cultural heritage.
