COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Greek and Latin at the University of Victoria provides a flexible program structure that allows students to build language proficiency while exploring the literature, history and culture of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. In Years 1 and 2, students complete 3 units from Greek (GREE), Latin (LATI) or Classical Studies (GRS) courses at the 100–499 level, followed by an additional 6 units from Greek or Latin courses across the same range. This early stage of the program emphasizes foundational language learning and introduces students to ancient texts and cultural contexts, while still allowing a substantial portion of electives so students can explore other academic interests. In Years 3 and 4, students continue their language development by completing another 3 units from GREE, GRS or LATI courses and an additional 9 units from Greek or Latin at higher levels. This advanced stage focuses more deeply on translation, interpretation and critical analysis of classical texts. Throughout the program, students complete a significant number of electives, giving them flexibility to combine their studies with other disciplines. Overall, the program supports progressive language mastery, cultural understanding and analytical skills, preparing students for careers or further study in humanities, education and related fields.
