COURSE CURRICULUM

The French & Francophone Studies program at the University of Victoria is designed to build advanced language proficiency alongside cultural and literary understanding of the French-speaking world. In first year, students complete FRAN180 Intensive French IV, which strengthens core skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, while leaving room for electives across other disciplines. Additional preparatory French courses may be required depending on a student’s prior experience. In second year, students develop a deeper understanding of the language through courses such as FRAN200 Introduction to French Linguistics and FRAN280 Literature, Media and Culture I, while also improving written communication in FRAN275 Writing in French I, where a minimum grade requirement ensures strong language development. In third and fourth years, the program advances to more specialized and applied learning, including intermediate linguistics, literature and culture, advanced writing, and oral communication through speech-focused coursework. Students also choose upper-level French courses that explore diverse Francophone regions, themes and texts, along with electives that allow interdisciplinary study. Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on fluency, critical thinking and cultural awareness. Graduates gain strong communication skills in French and a global perspective, preparing them for careers in education, translation, international relations, public service and cultural organizations.
