COURSE CURRICULUM

The Economics program at the University of Victoria is structured to build strong analytical, quantitative and critical thinking skills through a step-by-step progression from foundational concepts to advanced applied methods. In the first year, students study introductory microeconomics and macroeconomics alongside calculus and a range of social science electives, helping them understand how economic systems interact with broader societal issues. A significant portion of electives allows students to explore related disciplines such as political science, sociology or geography. In the second year, students move into intermediate microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, while also developing essential skills in statistics, probability and economic writing or technical communication. These courses strengthen the ability to interpret data and communicate economic ideas effectively. In third and fourth year, students focus on advanced topics including intermediate microeconomics, economic history and econometrics, with options to study applied econometric methods or statistical analysis in greater depth. Additional upper-level economics courses allow students to specialize in areas of interest, supported by further electives across disciplines. The program requires minimum performance standards in key courses to ensure academic rigor. Overall, the curriculum prepares students to analyze real-world economic problems, evaluate policy decisions and understand markets, making them well suited for careers in government, finance, consulting, research or further academic study.
