COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Applied Linguistics at the University of Victoria is a structured four-year program designed to build strong foundations in language study, psychology, and teaching methods, leading to advanced specialization in applied linguistics. In the first year, students study introductory linguistics through courses such as Foundations in Linguistics, along with introductory psychology, English academic writing, a second language, and general electives to build a broad academic base. The second year focuses on core linguistic knowledge, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax, while continuing psychology-related and writing courses. Students also take intermediate linguistics courses and further language studies along with electives. In the third and fourth years, the program becomes highly specialized and career-focused, emphasizing second language acquisition, teaching methodologies, grammar, applied linguistics issues, and practical seminar training. Students also complete advanced courses in topics such as sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, phonology, syntax, semantics, and language variation, allowing them to explore language in depth from both scientific and social perspectives. A practicum component helps students gain real-world teaching or applied experience. Additional upper-level English or writing courses and electives allow further academic flexibility.
