ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of Victoria (UVic), founded in 1903 as Victoria College, is the oldest post-secondary institution in British Columbia. Initially affiliated with McGill University, it operated as a two-year college offering arts and science courses until 1915. From 1921 to 1963, the institution was an affiliate of the University of British Columbia (UBC), expanding its educational offerings while operating out of Craigdarroch Castle and later, the Lansdowne campus. The university’s main campus is located at Gordon Head, acquired in 1961, and it offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. Throughout its history, UVic has prioritized research, innovation, and interdisciplinary learning, with a focus on social justice and economic productivity. The university's coat of arms, registered in 2001, represents its historical ties to McGill and UBC, with the motto "Let there be Light" reflecting its mission to illuminate minds and advance knowledge. UVic’s governance includes a chancellor, board of governors, and a president, with academic authority vested in the Senate. Today, UVic is a prominent research university known for its strong academic programs, a commitment to diversity, and a rich tradition of academic excellence, continuing to play a vital role in the province's educational landscape.
