COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Social Work (MSW) thesis-based program is a 30-credit hour graduate degree designed to develop advanced knowledge, research skills, and professional competencies in social work practice, policy, and administration. The program begins with foundational graduate-level courses SW 880 and SW 881, which introduce students to advanced social work theories, research approaches, and critical analysis of social issues affecting individuals, families, and communities. Students then complete three elective courses selected from a broad range of SW 803 to SW 890AA-ZZ options, allowing them to specialize in areas such as clinical practice, child welfare, mental health, community development, or social policy. These electives provide flexibility to align academic learning with professional interests and career goals in diverse social work settings. The program also includes SW 885, which supports advanced practice integration and professional development. A central component of the degree is SW 901, the thesis, which requires students to conduct original, independent research under faculty supervision. This research is evaluated through a written thesis and demonstrates the student’s ability to apply theory, research methods, and critical thinking to real-world social work issues. Overall, the MSW thesis program prepares graduates for leadership roles in social work practice, research, policy development, and further doctoral studies in the field.
