COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (MSc) in Statistics (thesis-based) is a 30-credit hour graduate program designed to provide advanced training in statistical theory, methods, and research. The program combines graduate-level coursework with independent thesis research under faculty supervision. Students complete a minimum of 15 credit hours of coursework selected from Statistics graduate course offerings, allowing them to build strong expertise in areas such as probability theory, statistical inference, data analysis, and applied statistics. These courses form the academic foundation required for conducting rigorous research. In addition, students complete STAT 900, typically taken twice for 1 credit hour each, which may involve seminars, professional development, or research-related academic activities within the department. Students are also required to complete STAT 902, a non-credit component that may include comprehensive examinations or preparatory milestones for thesis research. The central element of the program is STAT 901, which accounts for 13 credit hours and involves conducting original, supervised research in a specialized area of statistics. This research culminates in a written thesis that contributes new knowledge to the field. Overall, the program emphasizes strong analytical reasoning, advanced statistical methods, and research competence, preparing graduates for doctoral studies or careers in data science, research institutions, government, and industry.
