COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (MSc) in Physics (thesis-based) is a 30-credit hour graduate program designed to provide advanced training in theoretical, experimental, and computational physics, along with the development of independent research skills. The program begins with core graduate courses PHYS 800 and PHYS 801, which introduce essential concepts in advanced physics and research methodologies, forming the foundation for specialized study. Students then complete between 6 and 9 credit hours of additional coursework selected from PHYS 4xx–8xx level courses, allowing them to focus on areas such as quantum mechanics, condensed matter physics, astrophysics, or applied physics depending on their research interests. The program also includes 0 to 1 credit hour of PHYS 900, which typically involves seminars, professional development, or research-related academic activities within the department. The central component of the degree is PHYS 901, which accounts for 14 to 17 credit hours and involves conducting original, supervised research in a specialized area of physics. This research culminates in a written thesis that contributes new knowledge to the field. Overall, the MSc in Physics prepares students for doctoral studies or careers in research, academia, technology, and industry by building strong analytical, problem-solving, and scientific research capabilities in physics.
