COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (MSc) in Earth Sciences (thesis-based) is a 30.0 credit hour graduate program focused on advanced geological research and training. Offered through the University of Regina, the program is designed to develop strong analytical, field, and laboratory skills in Earth system sciences. The degree combines graduate-level coursework with a major independent research thesis under faculty supervision. Students complete ESC 8xx advanced Earth science courses, which provide specialized knowledge in areas such as geology, geochemistry, sedimentology, and structural geology. In addition to coursework, students participate in ESC 900 seminar components, which help develop scientific communication and presentation skills through academic discussions and research seminars. The core of the program is ESC 901, which accounts for the majority of the credit hours and involves independent thesis research. In this stage, students design and conduct original research projects, often involving fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and data interpretation. The thesis component allows students to contribute new scientific knowledge to Earth sciences while working closely with faculty supervisors and research teams. Overall, the MSc in Earth Sciences prepares graduates for careers in the energy sector, environmental consulting, geological surveying, and research institutions, as well as for further academic study at the doctoral level.
