COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Indigenous Language Education (MILEd) (thesis-based) is a 30-credit hour graduate program designed to support advanced study and original research in Indigenous language education, revitalization, and pedagogy. The program begins with foundational coursework such as ED 817, which introduces key concepts in Indigenous education, followed by EC&I 858, which focuses on curriculum and instructional practices relevant to language learning. Students also complete EC&I 871AQ and EC&I 871AR, which provide advanced exploration of Indigenous language teaching methodologies, applied linguistics, and culturally responsive educational practices. An additional Approved 8XX elective allows students to further specialize in a related area of Indigenous language studies or education, depending on their research interests. The central component of the program is ED 901 Thesis Research, which is completed over multiple registrations and accounts for a significant portion of the degree requirements. Through this thesis work, students conduct independent, original research under faculty supervision, focusing on issues related to Indigenous language preservation, revitalization, and education. The program emphasizes both academic rigor and cultural grounding, ensuring that research is conducted in respectful collaboration with Indigenous communities. Overall, the MILEd thesis program prepares graduates for doctoral studies or professional roles in education, research, and language revitalization initiatives.
