COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Indigenous Language Education (MILEd) (project-based) is a 30-credit hour graduate program designed to prepare students to apply theory and research-informed knowledge to real-world Indigenous language education contexts. The program begins with core courses such as ED 817, which introduces foundational principles in Indigenous education, and EC&I 854, which focuses on language education theories and pedagogical approaches. Students also complete EC&I 858, which emphasizes curriculum design and instructional strategies for language learning. Additional required courses include EC&I 871AQ and EC&I 871AR, which explore advanced topics in Indigenous language teaching, applied linguistics, and culturally responsive practices. The program also includes three Approved 8XX electives, allowing students to tailor their studies to specific interests such as language revitalization, curriculum development, or educational leadership in Indigenous contexts. The central component of the program is ED 900, a 6-credit project that enables students to integrate theory and practice by completing a supervised applied project rather than independent original research. This project is designed to address practical challenges in Indigenous language education and support community-based or educational initiatives. Overall, the MILEd project-based program prepares graduates for professional roles in education, language programming, and community development focused on sustaining and revitalizing Indigenous languages.
